Portugal has emerged as a leader in sustainable energy, achieving a remarkable milestone in 2024 by sourcing 71% of its electricity from renewable sources and no nuclear power plants, and aims much more RE with the support of private IPPs in a win win formula

The target was reached with renewable sources  and the energy mix was primarily composed of hydroelectric power at 28%, wind energy at 27%, solar photovoltaic at 10%, and biomass at 6%.

Notably, our country operates without nuclear power plants, underscoring its commitment to clean and safe energy

Beyond its energy achievements, Portugal is a true Atlantic paradise, with regions like the Azores and Madeira leading in marine conservation and renewable energy initiative.

In contrast, France 🇫🇷 relies heavily on nuclear energy ☢️, with approximately 67% of its electricity generated from nuclear reactors in 2024. This reliance has facilitated lower wholesale electricity prices, averaging €58 per megawatt-hour.

However, France’s nuclear sector faces significant challenges, including aging infrastructure, project delays, and financial concerns. For instance, the Flamanville 3 reactor has experienced substantial delays and cost overruns, highlighting the complexities of nuclear energy projects.

These contrasting approaches underscore the diverse strategies nations employ to achieve energy security and sustainability.

Portugal’s investment in renewables showcases a path toward a greener future 🌱, while France’s experience highlights the benefits and challenges of a nuclear-dependent energy policy.

This significant contribution from renewables underscores Portugal’s commitment to sustainable energy and positions the country as a leader in renewable electricity generation within Europe.

💡💰Portugal through the commitment of Ministério do Ambiente e Energia and its minister Maria Da Graça Carvalho and REN will increase substantially the REnewable sources incorporation in the Power mix very soon, through the release of the Direct Agreements – Termos de Referência studies for the batch of 5GW/1GW, that do not burden the Electricity Consumers with extra costs, like Floating Offshore does, and are supported by the IPP companies, together hand in hand with the República Portuguesa – XXIV Governo and prime minister hashtagLuisMontenegro commitments.

The IPP companies also wait for a very competitive value of the TSO/DSO Grid Infrastructure upgrade, in order hashtagPortugal can comply with its hashtagPNEC2030 targets
