Storage is no longer optional in renewables SPVs
Spain logged 397 hours of negative power prices in Q1 2026. Portugal logged 222. Both are records.
More solar, more wind, and not enough places to put the surplus. That’s the honest read on the Iberian market right now, and it’s reshaping what a “good” renewables SPV looks like.
We’re seeing it directly in the M&A conversations we run: buyers no longer ask whether a cluster includes storage — they ask how much, and whether it’s DC- or AC-coupled. Spain’s own storage target has moved to 22.5 GW by 2030, and flexibility now sits outside the grid-fee regime that applies to consumption, which sharpens the economics for co-located BESS specifically.
For a standalone wind or solar asset without storage, that’s a valuation conversation. For a hybrid cluster, it’s a different one. We’re seeing the gap between the two widen deal by deal.
It’s the same read whether the counterparty is a European utility, a Gulf-based investor or an Asian OEM looking to build a platform — storage is no longer optional in the underwriting.
