Biogas and biomethane are renewable energy sources produced through the anaerobic digestion of organic matter — generated at landfills, wastewater treatment plants and biodigesters from agricultural waste, manure, municipal waste, plant material, sewage, green waste and food waste.
Inside a closed system — an anaerobic digester, biodigester or bioreactor — anaerobic bacteria and methanogens break the biodegradable material down into usable gas.
Composition and environmental impact
What biogas is made of
Primarily methane (CH₄) and carbon dioxide (CO₂), with small amounts of hydrogen sulfide, moisture and siloxanes.
The methane imperative
Uncontrolled methane has a greenhouse effect around 104 times stronger than CO₂ over the short term. Captured and utilised, it becomes an effective low-carbon fuel instead of a climate liability.
