Europe’s biggest battery just got a lender queue 30 deep.

BW ESS has lined up debt financing for Phase 2 of its Hams Hall BESS in the West Midlands, taking the project to 400 MW / 1,424 MWh — on track to be Europe’s largest operational battery by megawatt-hours at commercial operations date. OCBC, Rabobank and Societe Generale are splitting the facility equally, with Rabobank also acting as facility agent and hedge provider. More than 30 lenders were in the room before terms were set.
What got this financed wasn’t the megawatt figure. Phase 1 already carries a 10-year floor and optimisation agreement with EDF — a revenue structure a lender can underwrite, not just a capacity number on a slide.
That is the pattern we see across every standalone storage asset that goes through technical due diligence: bankability tracks contracted revenue and operator track record first, hardware second. A well-designed BESS without a credible offtake or optimisation structure behind it still struggles to clear a credit committee — in the UK, in Iberia, or in the Gulf.
As standalone and co-located storage both scale across our markets, that due diligence bar is only getting sharper, not softer.
