Solar is no longer the endpoint, storage is the default
Abu Dhabi just reached financial close on a single project pairing 5.2GW of solar with 19GWh of battery storage — one of the largest solar-plus-storage financings built to date. The signal for the rest of the industry: standalone solar generation is no longer the finished product, it’s the raw input.
We’re seeing the same shift play out at a very different scale on our own drawing boards. Across Iberia, spot prices have gone negative for hundreds of hours already this year as solar floods the midday market — a curtailment risk that a battery converts into a monetization opportunity instead. In the Gulf, the driver is different — dispatchability and firm capacity — but the design answer converges on the same architecture.
Our in-house design work increasingly starts from that premise: layout, energy yield and grid studies done with storage sized in from day one, not retrofitted after a solar-only permit stalls. It changes the technical due diligence too — round-trip efficiency and degradation curves now sit next to irradiance data on the same spreadsheet.
From Iberia to the Gulf, hybridisation has stopped being the exception and started being the base case.
