Abu Dhabi’s 20th clean energy certificate auction just opened
Abu Dhabi’s grid operator opened registration this month for its 20th Clean Energy Certificates auction, with results due 5 August under a pay-as-bid clearing process.
Certificates like these are easy to dismiss as a compliance footnote. They aren’t. For a lender or an equity partner underwriting a Gulf solar or storage asset, a credible certificate market is a second, independent revenue signal sitting alongside the power purchase agreement — one more reason the cash flow behind the project is real.
It’s a different bankability lever from the one we spend most of our time on in Iberia, where grid access and permitting carry that weight. In the Gulf, demand-side instruments and sovereign-backed offtake do more of the work.
Running deals across both regions at once means underwriting to two different definitions of “bankable” — and knowing which one a given lender actually cares about.
