Nenuphar Advisors branded card: A solar farm that keeps producing at midnight

A solar farm that keeps producing at midnight

A solar farm that keeps producing at midnight. In Abu Dhabi, that’s now a construction site, not a slogan.

Masdar and EWEC broke ground in October 2025 on a 5.2 GW solar PV facility paired with a 19 GWh battery system at Al Azeezah — designed to deliver up to 1 GW of firm, round-the-clock renewable power from 2027. Independent estimates put the project at roughly $6 billion.

What stands out from a multi-market seat — Portugal, Spain, the UAE, and Africa — isn’t the headline capacity. It’s the framing. Storage here isn’t sized to shave peaks; it’s sized to replace baseload. That’s a different underwriting question, and a different grid-interconnection conversation, than the one most European storage tenders are still asking.

The Gulf is moving faster than most markets on this shift, but the economics it’s testing — storage duration, dispatch guarantees, PPA structuring around firm delivery — will show up in Iberian and African tenders within a few cycles, not decades.

Worth tracking for anyone underwriting BESS today: are you sizing for peaking, or for baseload?
