Hybridization: a design problem before a permitting one
Adding solar to a wind farm sounds simple. Getting the interconnection headroom right is the actual work.
Iberdrola secured permits in April 2026 to add two 51.3 MW solar arrays at existing wind sites in east-central Spain — hybrid plants sharing the same grid connection point, substation, and evacuation line as the wind assets already there.
From an in-house design desk, the appeal is obvious: land already permitted, roads and facilities already built, and — critically — a connection point that’s already secured. The harder question is technical: how much of that existing capacity headroom can solar actually use without triggering a fresh grid study, and at what hours does the solar profile compete with, rather than complement, the wind.
Get the headroom analysis right and hybridization is close to free capacity. Get it wrong and you’ve spent permitting time proving a connection can’t do what you hoped.
It’s a design problem before it’s a permitting one — which is exactly why we keep this work in-house rather than outsourcing the layout and yield modelling.
For developers running hybrid sites — is headroom analysis happening early enough in your process, or only once the interconnection study comes back?
