Four-hour battery storage now beats gas peaking on cost

Four-hour battery storage is now cheaper than open-cycle gas peakers in all 43 markets where Wood Mackenzie modelled both technologies.

That is the headline of its 2026 levelised cost of electricity (LCOE) update, published on 8 October 2026.

The numbers that matter for our markets

  • Middle East and Africa: four-hour storage at US$120/MWh in 2026, falling 33% to US$80/MWh by 2035, and cheaper than gas peaking in every gas market in the region.
  • Solar: single-axis tracker solar in the region at US$37/MWh today and US$24/MWh by 2035, with Saudi Arabia and the UAE on track to fall below US$20/MWh by 2033.
  • Globally: tracker solar is the lowest-cost new build in 43 of 48 markets modelled.
  • China sets the storage cost benchmark, more than 55% below the rest of Asia Pacific. Manufacturing scale is now the price setter.
  • Europe is the one to watch: battery turnkey capex rose about 2% this year, the first increase in three years, on cell and lithium prices.

Why the gap keeps widening

Two forces are moving in opposite directions. Gas turbine shortages and fuel volatility are pushing peaking costs up, while battery manufacturing at scale keeps pushing storage costs down.

What it changes in practice

  1. Peaking capacity is now a storage procurement question. Planners still running gas as the default flexibility option are pricing the wrong asset.
  2. In the Gulf and Africa, solar-plus-storage is no longer a premium hybrid. It is the least-cost firm option.
  3. Cheap cells do not make a bankable project. Grid access, revenue stacking and contract structure still decide which BESS projects reach financial close.

Average LCOE is not a project IRR. But when the cost curve moves this decisively, the burden of proof shifts to the gas peaker.
