Standalone vs Co-Located BESS: Iberia’s Unresolved Storage Question ?
pv magazine’s July review of last year’s Iberian blackout has a blunt diagnosis: the system that left 60 million people without power lacked the storage to absorb the shock.

A year on, storage is still the industry’s unresolved question — not because the case for it is unclear, but because the route to build it keeps shifting under developers’ feet.
Co-located BESS, riding on a solar interconnection’s spare capacity, looked like the shortcut: cheaper grid access, one permitting track, one project to finance. In practice that shortcut is narrowing. Charging economics tied to the host asset, curtailment exposure and revenue-stacking limits are increasingly making the case for a standalone build, evaluated on its own connection, its own dispatch logic and its own route to a capacity or ancillary-services contract, or both.
That is a design decision before it is a financing one. Every configuration — co-located or standalone, front-of-meter or hybrid — changes the yield model, the interconnection request and the buyer profile once the asset reaches Ready-to-Build. We run that comparison in-house on every storage mandate, because the wrong configuration is expensive to unwind later.
Iberia is not short of storage appetite. It is short of consensus on which route pays.
Standalone or co-located — where is the market settling for you?
