Iberia’s Negative Price Hours Are Repricing What Grid Access Is Worth

Solar output, negative prices, curtailment and voltage constraints are now converging in the same hours across the Iberian grid. For developers, that changes what “value” means in a portfolio.
A megawatt without a secured grid-connection permit is a bet on future capacity. A megawatt with one — plus the storage or hybridisation to firm it up — is a different asset entirely.
We see this daily running competitive processes for renewable portfolios: buyers are no longer paying primarily for installed capacity. They’re paying for firm access, dispatchability, and a clean regulatory file — the TRC, the environmental clearance, the interconnection study — that lets a project clear diligence without surprises.
That’s reshaping how we structure non-binding offer processes on both sides: sellers need the technical file airtight before going to market; buyers need underwriting models that price curtailment risk explicitly, not as an afterthought.
The grid bottleneck isn’t going away this cycle. The winners will be the developers and buyers who treat firm capacity as the asset — not the megawatt count.
