Merchant Price Compression Is Changing How Renewable Assets Sell
European wind output climbed and Iberian demand eased in the first week of August 2026 — and day-ahead prices moved with it.
It’s the same pattern we’ve been underwriting against for a year: more renewable output chasing the same demand curve compresses merchant capture prices, hour by hour.
On the M&A and intermediation side, this changes what buyers actually pay for. A teaser with strong nameplate capacity is no longer enough. What moves a non-binding offer now is a credible path to value: a firm PPA, co-located storage, or a hybridisation plan that lets an asset ride out the negative-price hours rather than sell blind into them.
We’re seeing it directly in the greenfield and Ready-to-Build processes we run — sell-side mandates that price in storage optionality outperform sale processes for standalone generation, even at similar capacity.
It’s a useful discipline for developers too: model the merchant curve before you shop the asset, not after a buyer asks the question.
If you’re structuring a sale process in this market, where is the value case landing for you — PPA, storage, or both?
