Hybridizing wind with solar reuses assets you’ve already secured
A major Northern European investor just added solar panels to an existing Portuguese wind farm rather than build a fresh greenfield site from scratch.
That is not a headline. It is, increasingly, the playbook.
Hybridizing wind with solar on land, permits, and a grid connection that already exist is one of the more underrated moves in Iberian development right now. It reuses the hardest assets to secure and simply adds generation on top.
From the design desk, the technical work looks different to a standalone build: re-running energy yield models for two co-located technologies, checking wake and shading effects from the turbines on the new PV rows, and re-validating the interconnection study against combined output rather than a single technology.
Done properly, hybridization can shorten the path to Ready-to-Build against a fresh site search, and it lifts the utilisation of infrastructure that would otherwise sit idle for large parts of the day.
It also raises the underwriting bar. Lenders and buyers increasingly expect one combined hybrid yield study, not two single-technology reports stapled together.
