Storage is now a first design assumption, not a bolt-on
Prosolia Energy just commissioned a 15 MW/60 MWh battery system at a 34.4 MWp solar plant in Portugal — one of the country’s largest solar-plus-storage hybrids to date, connected straight into the 150 kV transmission grid.
Hybridization is no longer the exception in Iberian development — it’s becoming the default design assumption, and Lisbon’s newly announced €400 million grid and storage investment plan (confirmed by the energy ministry this week) only reinforces that direction.
From the development desk, that shift changes how a project gets built, not just what gets built. Layout, energy yield modelling, and technical due diligence now have to account for storage dispatch and grid-code compliance from day one, not bolted on after a solar or wind design is frozen.
It’s also reshaping how development services agreements get structured. Partners increasingly want in-house engineering capability that can move a hybrid concept through layout, yield, and permitting in a single, coordinated workstream — rather than stitching together separate solar, wind and storage designers after the fact.
