Grid-forming BESS in Portugal moves from option to design specification
Portugal has made grid-forming capability mandatory for large battery storage plants, pv magazine reported on 28 October.

For a developer with in-house design capacity, this is a specification decision, not a procurement footnote. It sits in the inverter choice, the control architecture and the commissioning test plan from day one.
Retrofitting is the costly path. A design frozen on grid-following inverters before a requirement lands can mean a re-tender, revised studies and a later Ready-to-Build date.
It also touches bankability. Lenders and technical advisers will read the grid-forming specification as evidence that the project was designed to the rules in force at energisation, not the rules in force at filing.
