Greenfield to grid: why in-house delivery limits value leakage

Three solar plants in Castilla-La Mancha reached full commercial operation this week — Zelestra’s Brazatortas 1, 2 and 4, delivered by its own in-house EPC team and contracted to Tesla under a 57MWac power purchase agreement worth roughly 130GWh of output a year.

That detail is easy to skip past, but it matters. The gap between a project reaching Ready-to-Build and a project reaching commercial operation on budget is usually where value leaks — at the handoffs between developer, EPC contractor and O&M team, each carrying its own assumptions on yield, layout and grid behaviour.

We keep project design in-house for the same reason. The team that models energy yield and lays out a site is the same team accountable for what it actually delivers, from early greenfield screening through Ready-to-Build and into commercial operation.

That discipline does not change with geography. A solar cluster in Portugal, an early-stage pipeline in Spain, a development in the UAE, an African greenfield project — different regulators and grid codes, same engineering rigour applied end to end.

Fewer handoffs tend to mean fewer surprises at energisation.

For developers and asset owners: how much of your technical delivery stays in-house versus gets handed off along the way — and has that shaped your outcomes at COD?
