Portugal’s 1.05 GW storage auction lands in five weeks.
Portugal’s next storage auction lands in five weeks — 14 September, for roughly 1.05 GW split between standalone batteries and storage co-located with renewables, under the national strategy targeting 3 GW by 2030.
From our development desk, that timeline is the whole story right now. A standalone BESS project only reaches the auction on the back of a Development Services Agreement structured backwards from submission day: interconnection studies, technical design, and commercial terms that can flex as auction rules get finalised.
Our in-house design capability lets us run layout and grid-interconnection work in parallel with the commercial negotiation, rather than in sequence — which matters when weeks, not months, separate a live process from a missed window.
Standalone and co-located storage are being asked to solve different problems for the grid, and the DSA has to reflect that difference from day one, not retrofit it later.
For developers still structuring their approach to September’s window: how much of your BESS strategy is being built around the auction calendar versus around the asset?
