Portugal’s Storage Auction Puts BESS Cycling Strategy Centre Stage
Portugal has reaffirmed plans for a dedicated 750 MVA battery storage auction, as part of a new capacity market open to batteries, power plants and flexible demand.

The plan draws on the RMSA-E security-of-supply report jointly prepared by DGEG, REN and ERSE — official confirmation that storage is now core infrastructure, not an add-on.
On the design side, this changes the questions we ask before a battery asset is built. Chief among them: how many cycles a day.
One full cycle protects the warranty and stretches the asset’s working life. Two cycles roughly doubles the revenue-generating hours, at the cost of faster degradation and an earlier augmentation bill.
Layer a capacity-market payment on top of energy arbitrage and ancillary services, and the optimal cycling strategy shifts again — this time toward whichever dispatch pattern keeps the asset available when the system operator needs it most.
We model this at the design stage, standalone and co-located alike, because the choice a developer makes in year one still shows up on the P&L in year eight.
