Solar capture rates halved while the storage spread widened

Solar earned 43% to 50% of the baseload price in Spain, Germany and Greece in the 2026 energy-crisis window, against 85% to 91% in 2022.

The same analysis shows why. Night-time day-ahead prices rose by €36 to €51/MWh versus 2025, while midday prices moved between -€4 and +€14/MWh. Spain recorded 547 negative-price hours in the window, and 19% to 23% of solar output across the three markets was produced at negative prices.

The value moved into the spread. The average-day storage spread in Spain widened to about €131/MWh from €88/MWh in 2025, before losses.

From a developer’s seat, this changes the work before it changes the asset.

Layout, inverter loading and grid-capacity sizing become decisions about which hours a project sells into, not only how many MWh it produces.

For SPV buyers and sellers, a solar-only case and a co-located BESS case should be underwritten as different assets, each with its own capture-rate assumption.

These are averages for a defined 2026 window, not a forecast.
