Solar is Portugal’s top power source. Storage is next.
Solar just became Portugal’s single largest source of electricity for the first time — 19% of national consumption in July, ahead of hydro, wind and biomass, with renewables covering 53% of demand for the month (pv-magazine.com, 7 Aug 2026).
That’s a milestone worth celebrating. It is also a pricing problem.
Spain logged 397 hours of negative prices in Q1 2026, against 48 a year earlier. Portugal logged 222. More solar on the same grid, at the same hours, compresses the value of every uncontracted megawatt-hour.
This is exactly why standalone battery storage has moved from “nice to have” to the centre of our development conversations. Portugal has reaffirmed plans for a dedicated capacity auction targeting 750 MVA of storage — and the economics of standalone versus co-located BESS are being rewritten in real time.
On the ground, that means structuring development agreements around a project’s ability to shift value across hours, not just generate megawatts. The developers who model this now will price it correctly later.
Solar built the volume. Storage will decide who captures the margin.
