Storage strategy is rewriting the renewables design brief

Portugal is moving from single storage tenders to a full National Energy Storage Strategy — a public consultation opened this month alongside a fresh battery auction.

For developers, that’s a signal worth reading carefully, not just a procurement headline.

Every hybridization mandate changes the technical brief. Layout has to account for a shared grid connection point. Energy yield modelling has to reflect a storage dispatch profile, not just solar irradiance or wind resource. Technical due diligence has to answer questions buyers didn’t used to ask.

We build this in-house — from early-stage layout and resource assessment through to Ready-to-Build — because storage-plus-generation projects don’t tolerate a bolt-on approach. The design choices made at greenfield stage decide whether a plant clears bankability review two years later.

We’re seeing the same pattern outside Iberia. Gulf and African pipelines increasingly specify storage from day one rather than retrofitting it in later.
