Portugal’s Solar Record Shows Why Yield Assessment Matters

Portugal’s grid operator confirmed it this month: solar was the country’s number one source of electricity in July, for the first time ever.

But look past the headline and the same report tells a quieter, more useful story. REN’s own productivity index for July put solar at 0.89 and wind at 0.71 against the long-run baseline of 1.00 — a record month for output, delivered by a resource that still ran below its historical average.

That gap is the entire argument for rigorous resource assessment. A desktop P50 estimate tells you what a site should produce over twenty-five years. It does not tell you what July looked like, or what next July will look like, or how a lender will price that uncertainty into a term sheet.

We run our own measurement campaigns — lidar, met masts, independent energy yield studies — before a project goes anywhere near a data room. Not because the regulations require it, though they increasingly do, but because bankability is built on a number an investment committee can defend, not a number that was hoped for.

Records get headlines. Productivity indices get financings closed.
