Spain’s Ageing Wind Fleet Puts Resource Assessment First
Roughly 10 GW of Spain’s onshore wind fleet is closing in on 25 years of operation — the age where repowering conversations start in earnest, per reNews’ coverage from WindEurope 2026.

Repowering sounds simple on paper: swap old turbines for fewer, larger ones on the same site. In practice, the resource assessment has to be redone almost from scratch — 25-year-old met mast data doesn’t reflect current wind regimes, turbine technology, or grid-code requirements.
We’ve run repowering feasibility work where the original micrositing no longer makes sense once you’re placing three modern turbines instead of twenty-seven old ones — wake losses, noise envelopes, and grid connection points all shift. Skipping that step is the fastest way to end up with a permit application built around the wrong layout.
It’s also, increasingly, an M&A question: repowering rights are becoming a value driver in their own right when we run sale processes for legacy Iberian wind assets.
If you’re sitting on pre-2005 wind capacity, the resource assessment is the first call to make — not the turbine order.
