Data Centers Are Reshaping How Renewable SPVs Get Structured
Spain’s renewables association is pushing back this week on a draft rule that would require data centers to match 80% of their consumption with renewable generation on an hourly basis, asking instead for annual correlation.

Whichever way that detail lands, the direction is set: data centers are becoming one of the fastest-growing classes of renewable offtaker in Iberia, and hourly matching, even partial, changes what a bankable SPV looks like.
For a solar or wind asset to serve that kind of buyer, storage stops being optional. Co-located BESS, or a standalone battery paired contractually with generation, is increasingly what turns a greenfield project into something a digital-infrastructure buyer, or an IPP acquiring on their behalf, will actually sign.
We see this shift directly in our M&A and intermediation work: running competitive, non-binding-offer processes for renewables SPVs, and matching development-stage assets to the owner best placed to deliver on tighter offtake terms. The projects structured for hourly-matched demand today will clear diligence faster tomorrow, whoever the eventual buyer turns out to be.
It’s a reminder that regulation written for one sector, data centers, can reset asset values across an entire market.
