Spanish curtailment passes 6 TWh: what it means for yield and design
Curtailment in Spain passed 6 TWh by mid-October, double the 3 TWh of the same period in 2025, according to Aurora Energy Research data reported by El Periódico de la Energía.
That is five times the 2024 level. For a developer, curtailment moves from a footnote in the yield model to a line that drives the investment case.
Energy-yield assessments built on gross production overstate what a project will deliver at the most affected nodes. The report points to Extremadura and Aragon as showing the highest rates, and node-by-node differences are large.
In-house design lets us test one site under several assumptions: DC/AC ratio, tracker strategy, and a storage block sized to move output away from the hours that get cut.
Co-location is not a default answer. It earns its place where node data supports it, and the case should rest on hourly profiles, not on assumption.
For buyers and lenders, the diligence question becomes which curtailment scenario the model uses, and who validated it.
